FAQs
General Info
What is Kohakutou?
Kohakutou is a traditional Japanese candy since the early Edo period 400 years ago, known for its beautiful, gem-like appearance, crunchy exterior and a soft jelly interior. It is also known as amber candy, crystal candy or as we call it - crystal jelly.
What is it made of?
Our kohakutou is made of agar agar (seaweed), sugar, water and flavoured with fruit juices, puree, teas or coffee.
Is it vegan or halal?
Our kohakutou are made from plant based ingredients with the exception of our Honey and Yuzu peel flavour which both contain honey. They are vegan and halal friendly.
Does it contain nuts, gluten, milk, egg or dairy?
No, our recipes do not contain any of the above allergens. However, please note that while we do take extra care in ensuring our kohakutou are allergen-friendly, it is made in a home kitchen where common allergens are present.
How long do they keep for and how do we store them?
Our kohakutou are best enjoyed within 2 weeks of receiving them for the perfect balance of crisp shell and soft jelly centre.
Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and humidity, and keep them sealed airtight when not in use. If you notice the candies are starting to sweat, keep the lid open for a few hours to dry it out and they will be good again. Please do not refridgerate, as moisture can affect their texture.
Over time, the candy may naturally become much more crunchy - still delicious, just a little different!
Can we order as party favours for an event or party?
Yes, please refer to our ordering page or email us at hello.nijisweets@gmail.com to discuss further.
Please note that orders have to be placed at least 2 weeks in advance.
Shipping and Ordering
Where do you ship to?
We are based in Naarm (Melbourne), Victoria and currently we only ship in Victoria via AusPost. We are still working out what’s the best way for our candies to stay in pristine condition during shipping for when we ship Australia wide, so please stay tuned!
How does your ordering system work and how long does shipping take?
As a small-batch maker, we create each batch of kohakutou fresh and by hand. When we’re preparing a new batch, we’ll open our online shop for pre-orders for a limited time. Once your order is placed, we’ll make and pack your sweets, then ship them the following week once they are ready. Shipping times are usually 2 business days Victoria wide.
This system helps us reduce waste, ensure our stock is always fresh and give each batch the attention it deserves. We will always communicate the expected dates of shipping every launch!
Can I amend my order after it’s been placed?
Yes, certainly. If we haven’t shipped it already, just make another order, select ‘pick up’ option even if you want it shipped, and shoot us an email so we can put your orders together.
How does ‘pick up’ option work?
We will have 2 pick up points: Preston and Camberwell, and they happen at 10am on the Saturday of the week we ship your orders.
Can I return an item? What if it gets damaged during transit?
Each package is thoughtfully packed to keep your sweets safe and beautiful on their journey. However, as the crystal candies are somewhat fragile, some cracking is normal to see on arrival.
Unfortunately we cannot accept change of mind or return of your items.
If your items are damaged during transit, please take a picture and email us at hello.nijisweets@gmail.com and we will either refund or replace your order depending on stock availability. Thank you for your understanding.
